Luthi Ranch
Приєднався 25 лис 2018
In a day and age where the small family farm is disappearing, either selling out to development or being bought up by larger farms. I want to try and show the struggles we go through and the lifestyle we live on our small family farm as we try to keep the operation going and fight to pass it on to the next generation. We are a 6th generation family farm/ranch located in Western Wyoming right along the Idaho border in the beautiful area known as Star Valley. Come follow us along on our journey!

Mistakes Made and Dealing With Over Protective Mother Cows

We have a few things going on in this video from a small welding project in the shop to dealing with more baby calves. I question my decision to pound in T Posts around our straw bed ground after cows start rubbing and scratching on them enough that the eventually break them off at ground level. We have an ornery mother cow that doesn’t make our life any easier either.
How I Grafted An Abandoned Calf To A New Mother Cow

In this video I show you how to graft a calf to a new mom. There are a few different methods of doing this but this has to be the oldest and probably the one with the highest success rate. I try and give as much detail as I can to help anyone that might be trying to do this for themselves.
Days That Make You Question If Being a Rancher Is Worth It

It seems like this last week has been filled with nothing but problems and challenges. Some days ranching and farming really make you question if you want to live this type of life. There’s many easier ways to try and make a living but ranching and farming seem to get in your blood and you can’t seem to think of wanting to do anything else. In this video I open up a lot about the mental struggl...
A Day In The Life-Winter Calving With Me on The Ranch

Another winter storm is hitting the ranch. In this video I show a full day of calving and feeding cows. I try and show the challenges and difficulties that come along with calving this time of year. We use a few different tools to help our newborn calves out from a Roy L Heat calf warmer to colostrum supplements.

I give a detailed explanation how to use and load a Cap-Chur cattle dart gun to deliver medication at a distance. For anyone interested in looking into a Cap-Chur dart gun here is the company’s website. cap-chur.com/ I bought mine off the Valley Vet Website Valleyvet.com
When Days Don’t Go As Planned on The Ranch

Trying to plan your life around cows is a hard thing to do. There are so many variables and factors that come into play. From the fact you are dealing with live animals that have minds if their own to trying to predict the weather. In this video I show how my plans to deliver beef to our customers have to adapt and change to a situation that comes up on the ranch.
Why Do We Calve Our Cows In The Middle Of Winter?
Переглядів 4,2 тис.2 місяці тому
Why do some ranchers calve their cows in winter? It’s a question I get asked more and more lately. Why would you calve your cows in the middle of winter? I wanted to make this video and really give the details and reasons I start calving when I do. I try and talk about the pros and cons of it and why it seems to be the best choice for our ranch.

Building Metal Braces For the Elk Fence
Thanks Bryan 👍🏻
That works great for 90 degree joints and for churning out production work. But, the chop saw is not exactly portable. And building fencing or railings or roll cages requires lots of hand work with hand held angle grinders. Some very weird angles. Lots of trial and error fitment.
Thankx great tip
Wow What a successful day! And it’s still daylight Curious about the calf u pulled from the slew awhile back. That find was a miracle Update
Good days on Luthi Ranch. Great to get all your chores done and all the crew re deployed to there next job! Never good nor easy to loose a new calf but that is ranching. Good post, I like your sequencing the video to show the change in topography/snow, Good job Bryan!
I hope your bonuses are keep increasing and your salary should be tax free otherwise you should switch your job for other hard job where you can get promoted for your hard work 🥵
Most people would be in ICU suffering from physical and mental exhaustion if they did what You do in a days work. I guess to You it's just another day at the office. Glad You can see signs of spring in Your area. If those new cows You bought are as good as they look, You've hit a home run !!!!
👍
Farmer Tyler says his cows kinda split into to two groups. The ones with babies and the ones without. Can you separate the ones without babies from the water until they have their babies and they are strong enough to be around the water? 💖🌞🌵😷
Looks like you had a busy productive day. Good to see the bare ground now that the snow is melting. Love your two tractor copilots. Lol
It’s always nice when the snow starts to leave after a long winter. Those dogs have a pretty good life haha
I was at Tsc - central tractor lol
You always seem busy Todd!
@@LuthiRanchWY Wednesday's I am always , I go to the va to keep my head on straight 🤪& I try to do my running around when I go , I was at Home Depot before central tractor & both didn't have what I wanted / needed so I Amazoned it and will be here in a couple of days. Your calf is going to love u forever. Great job
Morning!
Morning Wayne!
Tried this several times over and the years, (thought it was called "aviation join" or something to do with aircraft) but I could never get the angle right. What was it 30 something?
Raccoons don't like walking on plastic and they hate hot peppers and onions. Plant some around your coop if ya can. You can put some plastic around your cup too.
Interesting! Thanks for the advice!
I had to giggle at your comment about keeping the channel clean of swearing and violence. XD Much appreciated. 😉
Haha I do my best
Excellent method , you could use a square off the chop saw table to line up the two pointy bits .
Won’t be long and Ellis will be your full time bottle calf feeder!
I’m looking forward to that day haha. It’s not my favorite chore to do every day
👍🏼
Thanks
👍🙏💪
Thanks!
Great video's and props to you for respecting the stores privacy's
Thanks for sharing Bryan 👍🏻
You are welcome!
Great to see the season is changing, always projects to do before the field work starts! Cows look good, glad your calves are doing well! Good post Bryan!
Thanks!
Great to see green grass!
It’s coming!
Great video Bryan
Thank you!
Swearing I won't tell no one 😆 But I'm not unsubscribing 😊
Haha I appreciate that!
Number three I'm late again sorry
Haha better than last week though!
Todd! You better get a new rooster! 😂😂😂
@@LuthiRanchWYWay to knock your faithful, Bryan. 😂

Will you need to till and reseed next spring?
I need to do an updated video on this. The alfalfa looked good the first year but seems to have thinned out over the last couple years
@4:50 where that cow turns and looks at you. They trust your husbandry skills.
I try and watch over them the best I can
Always a good idea :)
Haha I sure hope so!
Sold 3 calves yesterday all about 500lbs. average 2.80 lb, not bad.
Hopefully the prices stay good for this fall also
Gee you have ice n snow n we have rattlesnakes coming out of their dens different worlds
I can’t deal with snakes, even the little water and garder snakes we have around here scare me haha.
@LuthiRanchWY u deal with ice snow n grumpy cows what are a few snakes n wild hogs have ate a bunch of them have a great Sunday may the lord bless yall
I really like your videos. Shows true cattleman skills. I’m from Texas so I just can’t get over all the snow still there. We are having 90 already here
We get plenty of snow around here. We usually have snow on the ground from mid November to mid April. Glad you are enjoying our channel so far!
Awesome! I do a lot of rusty pipe fences.
I worked at Yellow. After they went bankrupt I worked at XPO and then Old Dominion, both of which made me leave the LtL world altogether. First and most importantly, the insurance was trash, I think the less I paid for the family plan was $117 a week and I still had to pay a $50 deductible at the doctor. At Yellow, we paid nothing for healthcare and no deductible. Second, and just as much important, is that OD and XPO make it to where you don’t get any overtime, period. None. Yellow didn’t give overtime away, they forced you to work it. Blame it one whoever you want, but the truth is that the LtL space got worse the day Yellow left the market.
I'm sitting here outside in 90° (and _humid_ ) and boggling over all your snow. XD Thank you for the update on the new cows! Deeply ignorant question incoming: I've heard of hoof rot but don't know what it is, exactly. Can standing in puddles constantly cause hoof rot or other problems?
I’ve never experienced hoof rot but I have heard that’s how it starts. Being in puddles and deep mud for too long. So I was glad to get the cows out of all that moisture in the Quonset hut.
Those new cows sure are looking good . Nice when you get them trained to follow the feed tractor. Good place for your old panels down by the river. Hope calving is still going well for you.
Thanks! It’s been going pretty good. I’m down to my last 4 cows, they are just taking their sweet time haha.
Nice video, Bryan. Appreciate your honesty about fighting the mud, and also your understanding us dry land folks! We’ve had some sprinkles but SE Texas has been flooded. They’ve gotten more in this week than we get all year.
I’ve been hearing about the flooding down there. I was going to ask you if you guys were getting any of that moisture but it sounds like you aren’t. Is the cotton planting going now?
@@LuthiRanchWY know a few guys started last week but most will be this week or next. They forecasted rain but it was east and south of us.
En idiot som ikke skal ha dyr, hva er galt i hode på denne mannen.!!!!😡😡
halts Maul 😡
You work so hard. Cows look great
Thanks!
Glad to see you got your new cow's moved to the river and you are right about water here in Kansas we are getting a little bit now but not enough and it's been a long time with out getting very much but glad you are still getting moisture and hopefully you never have to go with out it really sucks to see all your grass go to dirt and weeds so keep them videos coming 👍👍🇺🇲
I’m sorry to hear that. Like I said we don’t really have to worry much about water. We can have some dry summers but we usually have the snow melt to get our 1st crop up and going. The 2nd crop is usually more of a wild card if you don’t have irrigation. Hopefully you guys get some more rain! Are you guys getting all those tornadoes too I keep hearing about?
I just started Season 3 of Clarkson's Farm this morning. Not as good as Luthi Ranch, but entertaining! ; )
Haha we just started watching the 3rd season also! We enjoy it and it is pretty comical.
Thanks for sharing, one thing I know is how lucky you are for that lifestyle…and the beautiful place you live in…a little snow and mud is no big deal for you…I would never want to live in a place with no seasons..how boring that would be…the new cows look awesome…your herd is getting big…good job…it’s looking like cows are giving us a profit for a change lol…
I try to remind myself constantly how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place. It would be nice if the cattle prices would stay high for a little bit. I agree with you I enjoy the change of seasons also!
When extra time is aloud I think you should build a half moon panel. Then you can just join the 2 ends. Then we can see how you cope/saddle your pipe. I think I forgot how you did it 😁
I still need to build some gates for the elk fence so maybe I can show how I cope pipe in that video if I ever get around to it.
Moving cattle went smooth good to see.👍Nice job. That's where my bombardier would shine helping the work load clearing the snow. Just drive right into the river. Or even a better idea... all your help Moving cattle should of had a shovel in their hand 😂😂 yes that includes your wife 😆 Don't tell her I said that I don't want to get into trouble 😆
Haha that’s would have made short work of it for sure! The more and more you talk about your bombardier the more and more I want one!
Awesome video you got a lot of snow we didn't get that much this year in Utah. I really enjoy your videos thanks for taking me along it looks like the new cows are settling in good looking forward to seeing more stay safe stay warm God bless
Thanks for watching! We got a decent amount of snow this year, not as much as last year. Hope you guys had a good winter though.
You still have a ton of snow. Those are some fine looking cows. We started to dry up and then got 8 inches of snow then melted. My calving area is a swamp 🤯. Are you done calving?I am down to 2 left. Have a great week.
We had bared off the other week and were able to get into the fields for a few days but it’s been raining and snowing for over a week now. I’m down to my last 4, they are taking their sweet time though. Hope you guys had a good calving season
@@LuthiRanchWYwe did have a solid calving season. Waiting on 2. Trying to get some field work done this coming week. Have a good one.
I believe You've got a good set of cows, You deserve them. Just like You, they've got their whole life ahead of them.
I feel like they are good set of cows also. I still feel pretty young so that’s good haha
God dam. Does your cowa ever get green pasture??
Haha usually towards the end of May, winters are pretty long around here.
Looks nice but to cold for this Texan. Hope the quarantine cattle do well now. Its good to have some family and friends to help. Romans 10:9
